Of all the broadband and TV providers in the UK, choosing Virgin Media is probably the easiest case to argue. It is, quite simply, at the top of its game in most respects. Let’s take a look.
Make no mistake, other providers are catching up. Full Fibre from providers using the Openreach network (everyone except Virgin Media), now offers up to 944Mbps from some providers. But there's a catch. Full Fibre packages are only available to around one in three homes, where Virgin Media is available to nearly two in three. You're twice as likely to be able to get Virgin Media as things currently stand.
Like Full Fibre, Virgin Media broadband is more reliable than standard fibre, and you’re more likely to get speeds meeting, or exceeding those advertised.
Having subscription TV without a dish has long been Virgin Media's trump card, but no longer. Sky Stream is the newest game in town, providing the full monty when it comes to Sky TV, but relying only on an internet connection. It does, no doubt much to Virgin Media's chagrin, beat Virgin TV, both in the channels it offers (Sky Atlantic, and Sky Box Sets especially), and in terms of convenience (you don't need Sky Broadband and you can be up and running the day after you order it).
Which sounds like we're being negative about Virgin TV. We're not – it's great, with a vast number of channels and bolt-on options, including Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and so on, and the TV 360 box is vary capable, providing 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos to devices that support those formats. But you do need Virgin Media Broadband to get it, and you will need an engineer to come and install it, so it lacks all the convenience of Sky Stream.
Virgin Media bundles do save you money, and if you're not bothered by the additional installation or lack of Sky Atlantic it's a great choice. But, there is nothing to stop you getting Virgin Media Broadband and Sky Stream for a best of both worlds situation.
There are a lot of broadband providers offering a so-called ‘broadband-only’ service, but Virgin until recently was the only one that truly didn't require a telephone line. It still doesn't, but other providers have now cottoned on and caught up and you can now get broadband without a phone line from almost any provider – which is especially easy if you're opting for Full Fibre.
You can save money by not taking out a phone line, and again that was not the case until fairly recently. Now most deals come with no phone line as standard, so adding one on will add an additional cost.
Virgin Media and O2 merged last year to make one company. And although Virgin Mobile still technically exists it's currently being migrated to O2. Virgin Mobile already ran on the O2 network, so there's going to be very little in the way of upheaval for existing customers, while new customers can expect to see O2 SIMs as bundle options with Virgin Media Broadband and TV bundles. If you're in the market for a new SIM we strongly recommend taking advantage of one of these bundles – it works out very cheap indeed.
Pretty much all providers have to offer some form of parental control so families can cordon off the more adult corners of the internet from their young ones. Virgin is no different, though we would say it offers more than most in this area with a complete suite of tools including adult content filtering and security in the form of F-Secure virus protection.
We're not sure what's happening with Virgin Media of late, but its customer service reputation has taken a bit of a nosedive. It could be due to disruption in merging with O2, it could be it had a rough time during the pandemic. Whatever the reason, it now finds itself near the bottom of Ofcom's customer service tables where once it rode high.
Particularly poor were customers' satisfaction with how their complaints were handled (lowest of all major providers), and the percentage of customers with a reason to complain (highest of all major providers). The number of complaints to Ofcom about Virgin Media per 100,000 customers was second highest (Shell Energy Broadband winning that dubious accolade).
However, Virgin Media did fare well with average call waiting times when you contract them, and customers were very satisfied with the speed they were getting more broadly.
Virgin Media currently covers around 60% of UK properties, and all of which can get the top speeds on offer. You can find out what's available in your area by entering your postcode in our coverage checker above.
Unless you've had Virgin Media piped into your home before, installation requires a visit from an engineer, which right now, and usually, is free. Virgin offers its QuickStart self-installation packs for addresses previously connected to its services. The pack comes with instructions, and there are also video tutorials on Virgin's website.
Virgin is what some refer to as a ‘quad-play’ provider. That is, it offers broadband, TV, home phone and mobile. Here are its services with brief descriptions.
Virgin Media offers some of the fastest widely available broadband in the UK, with its top speed coming in at 1GB (1000Mbps) or more. Virgin Media broadband is also more reliable than that supplied by other providers with less downtime across its network than anyone else.
Virgin TV offers an enormous number of channels, the 360 box is one of the best free set-top boxes out there, and you can bolt on Sky Sports, TNT Sports, Sky Cinema and a host of other specialist channels. Also, you don’t need a satellite dish as it’s all delivered through the same cable as your broadband.
Virgin Media started life as Virgin Mobile, believe it or not. Since merging with O2, Virgin Mobile customers are being migrated across to that network. You can bundle in an O2 SIM with Virgin Media Broadband and TV bundles and you'll typically save a fair bit of money doing so.
Lines open 8am-8pm Monday to Sunday
Virgin Media charges moderately more than budget providers, but offers a premium service. On a cost per megabit (or per channel in terms of TV), it offers some of the best value in the country. Prices start from £24 per month.
All Virgin Media contracts are for 18 months, after which you will have the opportunity to switch. Don’t forget you can back out in the first 14 days after your services are activated if you’re not happy.
At the time of writing, Virgin Media is not charging set-up fees, but it has done so in the past and they may be reintroduced in the future.
Yes, if it’s within the first 14 days of your service. Beyond that, you will have to receive consistently unfit-for-purpose services and give Virgin Media every opportunity to fix it. If it fails to address your problem, you have the right to leave free of charge. One quirk of Virgin Media is that you cannot leave your contract mid-term if you move house – even to somewhere where Virgin Media services aren’t available. If this sounds terrifically unfair that’s because it is. Ofcom, the UK telecoms regulator, is currently looking into this issue.
